Living in New Jersey, it can be hard to come by a more contemporary approach to a back yard layout, with the exception to Jersey Shore locations. I prefer more of a California vibe. Bright colors, funky touches, lots of flowers, and a neat and linear approach to landscaping. And to start, what better way to create that hip California vibe than with a inviting vibrant front door...
This entry door has a craftsman influence, but I love the bright orange paint and the industrial hardware and fixtures.

This one is classic/traditional through and through, but its modernized as well with the paint and hardware.

Upon approaching my dream home, I'd keep the landscaping colorful but linear. I like the idea of hydrangea bushes in the back, then some short boxwood shrubs, and then some impatients in the front.

This river rock edging would be perfect leading up the path to the front door.

Of course the backyard would have its own unique stone layout like this one.

I'd keep some raised beds in the backyard for tomatoes and fresh cut flowers, including...

Gladiolas and peonies!

Of course there will be lots of entertaining, including a dining area partially shaded by a pergola teeming with vines, and a sunken fire pit for cooler nights and roasting mallows.

Dream or no dream I'm definitely finding a way to install a sunken trampoline

Either a lap pool and/or coi pond would be covered in these glossy floating balls

And finally the house would be covered in climbing roses, inspired by my trip to Nantucket.

Sighhhh, dare to dream...
